THE OBSERVATION

What we can actually establish.

Researchers examined Chandra archive data in a low-energy X-ray band and identified 84 hypersoft-source candidates across six nearby galaxies.

FROM THE SCIENCE STORY

The investigation behind the image.

Chandra observations taken before later instrument changes provide a useful historical window. In one analysis of six nearby galaxies, the team found 84 objects with extremely soft emission, some already associated with nova systems. The population is interesting partly because it may reveal activity missed by more conventional X-ray searches.

The 84 sources have varied and uncertain identities; the study does not show that all are supernova progenitors or that they will explode.
