A Primordial Black Hole in the Imagined Early Universe

THE OBSERVATION

What we can actually establish.

The LIGO–Virgo–KAGRA network issued the preliminary S251112cm alert in November 2025 for a possible compact-object event with an unusual inferred chirp mass.

THE ILLUSTRATION

FROM THE SCIENCE STORY

The investigation behind the image.

Ordinary stellar collapse does not produce a black hole of that size under standard formation models. A black hole created from unusually dense fluctuations in the early universe—before stars existed—would offer a different origin. This primordial-black-hole explanation remains theoretical rather than demonstrated.

The alert is not a confirmed astrophysical detection. Conditional mass probabilities do not measure the probability that an object is primordial.
