Conceptual illustration: MMX Approaches Phobos — MMX Approaches PhobosJapan’s Martian Moons eXploration mission is heading for Phobos, a small, battered moon that may preserve evidence of Mars’s violent history. Artist’s conception. The story behind this image

Conceptual illustration: Mars Sends Fragments Into Space — Mars Sends Fragments Into SpaceImpacts on Mars can eject fragments into space. Some material may eventually reach Phobos, where it becomes mixed with the moon’s surface dust. This illustration represents a proposed natural transfer process, not an observed impact event. The story behind this image

Conceptual illustration: Competing Origins of the Martian Moons — Competing Origins of the Martian MoonsPhobos may have formed from material associated with a massive Martian impact, captured asteroidal material, or a more complex process involving disrupted debris. Its composition could help scientists distinguish these possibilities. Conceptual illustration. The story behind this image

Conceptual illustration: Idefix on a World of Weak Gravity — Idefix on a World of Weak GravityThe French-German Idefix rover is designed to survive an unpowered descent onto Phobos, right itself, and explore the moon’s surface for approximately 100 days. Artist’s conception. The story behind this image

Conceptual illustration: A Brief Contact With Phobos — A Brief Contact With PhobosMMX plans to make brief landings on Phobos and collect at least ten grams of surface material using two sampling systems. The landings and sample return remain future mission objectives. Artist’s conception. The story behind this image

Conceptual illustration: The Planned Return of Phobos Dust — The Planned Return of Phobos DustMMX is scheduled to return its Phobos samples to Earth in 2031, with a recovery operation planned in Australia. The capsule could carry the first material deliberately collected and returned from the Martian system. Conceptual future scene. The story behind this image
