Listening Beneath the InSight Landing Site

InSight’s seismic measurements support models of water-saturated rock deep beneath its landing region. The inferred reservoir would occupy pores and fractures; it has not been reached or sampled. © 2026 DarkScienceDocs.com
THE OBSERVATION
What the evidence can show.
InSight recorded seismic waves beneath its Martian landing region. Researchers compare how those waves travel with models of the crust, including models in which deep rock contains water in pores or fractures. The inference depends on material properties and geological assumptions. It does not amount to drilling into a reservoir or collecting a sample of present-day Martian groundwater.
THE ILLUSTRATION
What the artwork imagines.
The lander anchors the scene at the surface while an invented cross-section opens the deep crust below it. The highlighted fractures make a proposed interpretation legible, but their individual locations and shapes are not seismic images. The illustration compresses immense differences in scale. It does not show a measured connection between the spacecraft, a specific crack and a water sample.
